The £5 Souvenir Challenge with Gavin London in Kefalonia

In the second £5 souvenir challenge thedepartureboard.com’s co-founder Gavin London returns from Kefalonia with this tasteful tabletop windmill.  Gavin explained:

After visiting the beautiful Ionian Island of Kefalonia, my wife and I spent an afternoon wandering along the main tourist strip in Argostoli looking for the perfect ‘tacky’ souvenir (if there is such a thing!) for thedepartureboard’s writing desk. It was upon visiting our third tourist emporium that my eyes caught a glimpse of this ‘beautiful’ piece.

Now, from what I understand from the word souvenir, which is French for remembrance or memory (in case you didn’t know!), it should be an artefact that pulls the recipient into the world you have inhabited for a short time. A popular souvenir from New York would, of course, be a Statue of Liberty. Pisa? The tower of a leaning persuasion.

However, the ‘Kefalonia Windmill’ didn’t seem to follow this rule. During our Greek odyssey, the nearest we got to a windmill, were the wind turbines that look over Argostoli, which this piece definitely didn’t resemble!

The other reason I was drawn to this piece was the fact it was the closest I could get to £5 without going over!

Thank you Gavin for another worthy addition to Thedepartureboard.com’s desk!
