Picture The World Project, Portugal

Obidos-Town-Gate

Photo by Jo Bradley of restlessjo.wordpress.com

A wealth of history and elegant old worldliness; courtly, reserved people who are proud of their heritage;  cobbled streets, painstakingly renewed at regular intervals; a mix of stunning architecture and slightly shabby, peeling buildings; fabulous blue and white azulejo tiled panels.  These are my images of Portugal – not easy to summarise in one photo.

After several changes of mind, I was irresistibly drawn to the Porta da Vila (town gate) at Obidos.  This enchanting walled town was given to his bride Isabel as a wedding present by King Dinis in 1282, and azulejos have never been used to better effect.

I would like to nominate Cath of (catbirdinoman.wordpress.com) to choose from her beautiful photos of Oman, and Andrew Petcher of (apetcher.wordpress.com) who loves Greece probably as much as I do Portugal.

Thank you Jo for submitting this beautiful photo to represent Portugal.  Looking forward to seeing Cath and Andrew’s contributions.
