Typical Safari

On a typical camel safari you will have the chance to travel across deserts and dunes, visit remote villages, see a slice of traditional village life and have the opportunity to sleep under the stars, far away from civilisation.

The Indian city of Jaisalmer is well known for its camel safaris. Located in the heart of the Thar Desert its remoteness is coupled with much in the way of history and interesting architecture including a number of temples.

Safaris from the city cater for a number of different budgets, ranging from basic backpacker treks to up-market luxury ones that include fine meals and entertainment. The length of treks also varies, ranging from overnight to 14 or 21 days for real enthusiasts. There is often flexibility over the route you will take, meaning that you can opt to stick to popular tourist routes or head for somewhere really remote.

Camel safaris are popular with those looking to experience a different way of life first hand. As well as providing a cultural experience, getting to ride a camel across the desert is undoubtedly a lot of fun. And with lots of opportunities for sunset walks, evenings round the campfire and time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, where better than to enjoy a spot of romance?

It is of course, important to ensure that you book with a reputable company. Many of the hotels in Jaisalmer can book safaris and there are also a number of specialist companies that offer camel treks as well.

What To Take

If you are going on a camel safari then it is a good idea to make sure that you have the essentials before you depart as you won’t be able to pop to the shops once en route! Loose comfortable clothing is a must, as is a hat, sun cream and sunglasses. Toilet paper and a water bottle will also come in handy. Make sure to pack some light warmer clothing too as the temperature can drop in the desert at night. Something padded to sit on might also come in handy, particularly if you’re not used to horse riding or cycling.

A camel safari is a great way to enjoy an adventure holiday that, as well as being fun, gives you the opportunity to slow down, relax and spend some quality time with others. What better way to find romance, remoteness and feel like a true explorer?
